HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a contract in Panama on Aug. 7 to supply 1,000 MW of power generation equipment to U.S. energy infrastructure developer Corban Energy Group in a deal worth 956 billion won, or about $675.4 million, marking its largest-ever engine supply order. The 9.6-MW HiMSEN gas-engine power systems will be used directly for U.S. Big Tech data centers and lift the company's U.S. data center-related power equipment orders this year to 1.58 trillion won after a 627.1 billion won order from AEG in April. The company said the medium-speed engines are designed for high output, efficiency and continuous 24-hour operation, with fast response to fluctuating data center loads as AI services and cloud investment drive up electricity demand. EPRI projects data centers' share of total U.S. electricity consumption could more than triple by 2030, and HD Hyundai is widening its push through floating data center technology, power equipment and maintenance services while the broader AI build-out is expected to boost steel demand in South Korea.
