Illinois Governor Jay Robert "JB" Pritzker said he sent an August 5 letter to Chevron Corp., ExxonMobil Holdings Corp., ConocoPhillips and other oil producers demanding pump price cuts, direct refunds or other relief for consumers, along with Illinois profit-and-margin data and compensation details for each company's five highest-paid executives. Separately, Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in a Monday post on X that oil companies that had "invested $5 million" in Donald Trump's inauguration fund later made "$23 billion in excess war profits" while drivers faced a gas bill that was "$857 higher than last year." The American Automobile Association said the U.S. average gasoline price was $4.0091 a gallon, with California at $5.5955, while West Texas Intermediate traded at $82.20 a barrel and Brent at $87.77. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz could keep pushing pump prices higher, even as Trump said the waterway was "open."
