Minesto's Dragon 4 microgrid-scale tidal power plant in Vestmannasund, Faroe Islands, generated record electricity over the summer after an upgraded power-take-off system improved output through each tidal flow cycle. The company said stronger-than-historically modelled currents at Vestmanna and the higher hydrodynamic efficiency of its second-generation Dragon Class kite technology meant the original PTO did not fully use the site's potential. CTO Bernt Erik Westre said data from Dragon 4 "Saga" in Q2 and Q3 this year showed stable generation that tracked tidal-current intensity, with the PTO as the only hardware difference, while CEO Dr Martin Edlund said the results support Minesto's claim that it has demonstrated the most efficient tidal energy power plant in the world in energy conversion performance over several months of continuous production. Minesto also said the upgraded system reduced costs and increased the commercial value of its Dragon hardware and software intellectual property over the summer.
