Discovered Materials has raised a $9 million seed round from Lightspeed India Partners after emerging from Y Combinator, with participation from Peak XV Partners and angel investors Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar. Founders Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas say the company is using swarms of AI agents to search for new semiconductor materials that could reduce heat generation or improve heat dissipation in integrated circuits, an issue tied to the high electricity use and cooling needs of AI-heavy data centers. The startup said it has built a software pipeline that uses Anthropic models in a custom harness to generate candidate materials and physics models trained in-house to simulate whether those candidates are worth pursuing. It also released examples of hundreds of new materials and a "Material Discovery Bench" to track how frontier models perform on the task. The company is competing in a field that includes MatNex, SandboxAQ, and CuspAI, but is focusing specifically on the thermal problems of semiconductor materials. Discovered Materials says it has already identified several materials with properties matching those used by major chipmakers, though it has not disclosed details. The broader challenge remains turning promising candidates into manufacturable products without sacrificing electrical performance. That helps explain why, despite growing interest in AI-driven discovery, neither drugs nor materials found by AI have yet made a broad commercial impact at scale.
