Hut 8 said it supports Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's directive to the Public Utility Commission of Texas, or PUCT (Texas utility regulator), and ERCOT (Texas grid operator), arguing the order's focus on grid reliability, local resources and community impacts aligns with the company's data center development model. The company said it has about 1.5 gigawatts of utility capacity across operating and development sites in Texas and highlighted Beacon Point, its AI data center campus under development in Nueces County, as an example of that approach. Hut 8 said Beacon Point is being designed with battery systems to help mitigate voltage impacts on the grid, a closed-loop cooling system using water sourced from outside Nueces County, and planning measures intended to reduce effects on nearby communities. The company also said it joined the PUCT's voluntary data center survey before the governor's directive and will continue cooperating with PUCT and ERCOT as their review continues. Chief Executive Officer Asher Genoot said Hut 8 has operated in Texas under that framework since 2022. Local figures including the heads of the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation and Del Mar College, the superintendent of Calallen Independent School District and the sheriff of Nueces County endorsed the company's engagement with the region, while Calallen ISD also said it would keep evaluating the project's effects on students, families, taxpayers and infrastructure.
