The Baltic Dry Index, a benchmark for global dry bulk shipping costs across major vessel classes, fell 1.2% to 3,046 on Tuesday, extending a 0.2% decline on Monday. The latest drop was driven by continued weakness in larger capesize vessels, with the capesize index down 2% to 5,001. Panamax shipping remained firmer, as the panamax index rose 0.3% to 2,312, its highest level since June 2, while the supramax index edged down 0.2% to 1,600, its lowest level in nine weeks. Capesize vessels typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, whereas panamax ships usually transport 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain.
