U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States will formally seek compensation from Iran in future negotiations after Iran, he said, requested damages for losses caused by the past five months of military conflict. Trump said that demand had never previously been raised in talks between the two sides and called it "an interesting idea," saying Washington would pursue compensation for casualties tied to multiple confrontations, including those killed in the USS Cole attack and others wounded or killed by roadside bombs and in other conflicts. He also said Iran should compensate the families of protesters killed in Iran over the past 50 years and referred to 52,000 people killed during the last five months. The remarks came as Iran's Supreme National Security Council, cited by CBS News, said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the United States "corrects its behavior" and set out demands including an end to the war, the lifting of the naval blockade and sanctions, the withdrawal of U.S. forces, the release of frozen assets and full compensation for war damage. Trump separately told Axios that the United States is "only semi-negotiating" with Iran and said the country was under severe financial strain. A separate agreement between Iran and Oman on governance of traffic through the strait reportedly gave Iran partial control over incoming traffic, though little progress has followed.
