The Congressional Budget Office said the U.S. fiscal 2026 deficit is now projected at $2.1 trillion, up from $1.9 trillion in February, after the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration lacked authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose its signature tariffs. CBO said tariff and customs-duty revenue is running $250 billion below its earlier outlook, partly offset by income and payroll taxes about $75 billion above baseline, leaving a net revenue shortfall of roughly $200 billion. The update also showed the deficit reached $1.8 trillion in the first 10 months of fiscal 2026, while net interest on the public debt rose $117 billion from a year earlier to $963 billion, or about $3.18 billion a day, reflecting a larger debt load and higher long-term rates.
