Luke Dashjr has selected BLAKE2b as the new proof-of-work algorithm for the planned BIP-110 chain after abandoning an earlier method that tied the choice to a Testnet4 block hash and drew manipulation concerns. The proposed Sept. 1 hard fork is intended to create an independent blockchain and a new token distinct from Bitcoin rather than change the existing Bitcoin network in place. BLAKE2b is generally seen as more suitable for general-purpose CPU and GPU mining than Bitcoin's current SHA-256d, potentially reducing the advantage held by existing Bitcoin ASIC miners. Dashjr has also been removed from the Bitcoin BIP editors team, according to the earlier reports carried alongside the proposal debate.
