The U.S. government has sold two sanctioned oil tankers seized in January for scrap, according to Lloyd's List. Dubai-headquartered vessel recycling firm Global Marketing Systems bought the ships last month for an undisclosed amount. The vessels are the Era, previously known as Marinera and Bella 1, and the Lileo, previously known as Galileo and Veronica, and both are due to be demolished at scrap yards in India. GMS CEO Anil Sharma said the sales were authorized by a court order, though ownership history was unclear, underscoring how sanctioned ships often change names to avoid detection. The Era had been seized south of Iceland after a weeks-long Atlantic pursuit and had previously slipped through a U.S. blockade in the Caribbean aimed at curbing Venezuelan oil exports. Washington said at the time that the ship had carried sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran. The Lileo, also Russian-flagged when seized in the Caribbean Sea, was targeted under U.S. sanctions against Russia. Reuters said the U.S. seized as many as 10 oil tankers after its military action in Venezuela.
