A virtual-currency scam built around so-called staking mining has emerged, with more than 30 known victims losing over 3 million yuan in total. Fraudsters reportedly cultivated relationships on social platforms for one to two months, then steered victims to private overseas messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Discord, where they were told to download overseas crypto wallets and authorize fake mining contracts that gave scammers permission to move assets without a password. The scheme was framed as idle computing-power staking mining rather than investment or wealth management, with promises of zero risk and steady passive income. Small early rebates were used to persuade victims to commit larger sums. Scammers also reportedly used carefully curated personal profiles, such as claiming to run a maternal-and-baby store in Hong Kong, showing strong empathy and even sending Wong Tai Sin amulets, to build credibility before discussing the scheme. The highest known individual loss exceeded 300,000 yuan, and cases have been identified across multiple provinces.
