South Korean prosecutors have sent seven alleged members of the so-called Brilliance Team to trial in custody over accusations they ran a roughly 40.9 billion won crypto investment scam. Maeil Business Newspaper reported that the Anyang branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office indicted the group on July 24, including a Chinese man in his 50s identified only by his surname Kim as the alleged ringleader and six South Korean members. Prosecutors accuse the defendants of organizing a fake volunteer group, approaching targets from November 2024 to April this year, persuading them to invest in virtual assets, and stealing about 40.9 billion won from 436 people. The case underscores how fraudsters can use community or charitable cover stories to build trust before soliciting crypto-related investments.
