Apollo Sports Capital is providing $2.6 billion in debt and equity financing to Yankee Global Enterprises in one of the largest private equity investments in sports, giving the New York Yankees' holding company fresh capital to refinance debt and pursue expansion while the Steinbrenner family retains control. The deal will add Apollo Sports Capital CEO Al Tylis to the board through a newly created seat, with Hal Steinbrenner remaining the Yankees' managing general partner and MLB control person. The transaction comes as institutional investors push deeper into professional sports through franchise stakes, acquisitions and financing, even as Major League Baseball caps private equity fund ownership of team equity at 15%.
