The Kennedy Center has been ordered to pay $252,000 in legal fees and costs to jazz musician Chuck Redd, who withdrew from a planned performance after the venue's board voted to add President Donald Trump's name to the center's branding. The fee dispute now sits alongside a separate fight over the renaming itself: U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper ruled in May that the move was illegal because the center's founding law reserves naming authority to Congress and "makes crystal clear" that the center is to be named for President Kennedy. The venue has appealed and says removing Trump's name could cost it "hundreds of millions" of dollars in donations, while tarps and scaffolding still obscure the facade as the court awaits a report due by Aug. 20 or within five days of the next board meeting.
