Sen. Chris Murphy and Sen. Elizabeth Warren accused the Trump administration of possible corruption or political favoritism in its handling of the Cyclospora outbreak linked to Taylor Farms. Murphy said the administration weakened or failed to pursue stronger food-traceability rules in a way that benefited Taylor Farms and that the company later made a $1 million donation tied to Donald Trump. Warren, in a Thursday letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., asked whether lobbying and Trump-aligned political donations influenced outbreak communications, testing decisions and food-safety policy changes, including the 2025 delay of the FDA traceability rule and a reduction in Cyclospora tracking through CDC FoodNet. The outbreak investigation has remained active since May 1, with the CDC reporting 4,173 domestically acquired confirmed cases and 308 hospitalizations, while more than 7,400 suspected cases remained under investigation. Health authorities traced the outbreak to shredded or iceberg lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms from Mexico and the company recalled affected products, including items sent to Taco Bell and some Walmart stores, while disputing aspects of the FDA's testing after the agency said an initial positive lettuce sample outside the recall was a false positive.
