Count Binface, the novelty candidate portrayed by writer and comedian Jon Harvey, has become the most prominent opponent to Nigel Farage in a special parliamentary election in Clacton on England’s eastern coast. Farage, leader of Reform U.K., is widely expected to win comfortably after resigning last month and forcing the new vote in the seat he had previously held with a large majority. The by-election has drawn unusual attention because Britain’s major political parties declined to field candidates, calling the contest a political stunt designed to shift focus from a parliamentary investigation into a five million-pound gift, about $6.7 million, that Farage had failed to disclose. A recent poll suggested Farage could secure 73 percent of the vote. Count Binface, a trash can-costumed comic persona who claims to be an alien from Sigma IX, says the race is politically revealing even if he loses, because Farage is facing 33 other candidates, including several independents and three contenders from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party.
