Iran is not holding any discussions on extending its ceasefire with the United States and wants Washington to first recommit to the interim agreement signed in June, according to a senior Iranian source. Tehran says the deal, which was meant to halt fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, was violated by the United States almost immediately and was later effectively abandoned when U.S. President Donald Trump declared it "over" in early July. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said messages are still being passed through Pakistan and Qatar, but broader negotiations remain off the table while Iran sees the United States as breaching the pact. The standoff leaves the 60-day ceasefire window close to expiring with no sign of renewal, while disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions and regional security remain unresolved.
