A coalition opposing a California utility bailout proposal backed by Governor Newsom has expanded to include Representative Ro Khanna, former California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, UC Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and former Public Utilities Commission President Loretta Lynch. The group signed an open letter organized by Every Fire Survivor's Network arguing that an 11th-hour plan in Sacramento would shift wildfire costs away from for-profit utilities and limit survivors' ability to obtain full compensation when utility negligence causes fires. Khanna said wildfire survivors deserve full compensation for losses caused by negligent utilities and called a late-session bailout that limits survivors' recovery rights an improper use of government power in favor of companies that have spent heavily to influence state decision-making. He said the three for-profit utilities made billions last year, distributed billions more to shareholders and paid their CEOs tens of millions of dollars, while survivors left homeless by Edison's failure to remove equipment that sparked the Eaton Fire need help instead. Chemerinsky said survivors should retain their full legal remedies against utilities whose negligence destroys homes, while Jones said the proposal would leave survivors less able to recover and could push insurance premiums higher because utilities would not be required to repay policyholders for fires they start. The broader dispute has also drawn scrutiny from Senate Energy Committee Chair Ben Allen, who pressed PG&E and Edison executives over reported threats tied to liability reform. Consumer Watchdog said it has been running ads across California targeting supporters of the proposed legislation.
