Sergey Brin has been pressing Google's AI teams to move faster on Gemini as Alphabet tightens control over Google DeepMind after Anthropic and OpenAI pulled ahead in frontier models. Alphabet on August 5 promoted Koray Kavukcuoglu to senior vice president of Google DeepMind with final authority over Gemini development, frontier AI research and Gemini app and developer teams, while Demis Hassabis became chairman of Google DeepMind and Alphabet's first Chief Scientist. Google also delayed its next flagship Gemini release by about two months after August internal tests showed it still lagged rivals in areas including coding. Separately, a report cited by Beating monitoring and linked to the OneMillion_AI Telegram channel said Google DeepMind may cut about one-third or more of its roughly 7,000 to 8,000 staff and redirect resources away from some ultra-large flagship models and toward the lower-cost Flash line amid TPU constraints and heavy internal competition for computing power.
