Todd Blanche again said Wednesday that the Justice Department's $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund has been rescinded and will not return, even after President Donald Trump said its fate would be up to the attorney general. Blanche said he had repeatedly testified that the fund was "dead," withdrew the May order that created it and would only support compensating people he and Trump say were targeted under the Biden administration through legislation or another mechanism, not through the defunct fund. The proposal, announced in May to compensate people who alleged they were wrongly targeted, was abandoned under pressure from Republican senators whose support Blanche needed for his 50-49 Senate confirmation. It drew bipartisan criticism because it emerged as part of a deal for Trump to drop a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and two civil claims totaling $230 million tied to the Russia investigation and the 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago, raising accusations of self-dealing and concern that Jan. 6 rioters could receive taxpayer money.
