An oil spill from the sanctioned tanker Caroline Bezengi has reached beaches near Ras Madrakah in southeastern Oman, while satellite imagery and video verified by Reuters showed two additional slicks in Iranian Gulf waters near Qeshm Island and Sirri Island. Oman said specialized teams have been deployed to monitor and limit the Caroline Bezengi spill, which Reuters said involved about 800,000 barrels of Russian crude after the vessel ran aground on June 30. In Iran, foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said preliminary evidence indicated a "foreign bulk carrier" as the source of pollution reaching Qeshm Island, while analysts cited by Reuters said the larger Qeshm slick may be heavy fuel oil and could be linked to a leak from the Liberia-flagged Minoan Pioneer, a dry bulk carrier struck by an unknown projectile near Oman on August 3. Reuters could not independently confirm the cause of the Iranian slicks or the substances involved.
