Protect Progress, a U.S. pro-cryptocurrency political group, used fabricated Miami Herald-style headlines in advertisements targeting Oliver Gilbert in Florida’s 24th Congressional District Democratic primary, the Miami Herald reported. The newspaper said the group misquoted three Miami Herald articles to depict Gilbert as backing President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration policies. The spending underscores how crypto-aligned political organizations are deploying large campaign war chests in down-ballot races: Protect Progress has spent more than $22 million nationwide during this election cycle and reported more than $1 million in spending aimed at defeating Gilbert ahead of the Aug. 18 primary. The group is linked to Fairshake, a political action committee backed by crypto companies including Coinbase and other industry figures.
