Naver backs wave-powered offshore AI data center startup in AI infrastructure push

Naver said on Aug. 13 that it invested in a U.S. startup identified in its latest announcement as Pantala, and in earlier details as Panthalassa, to support wave-powered offshore AI data centers as it expands into AI infrastructure. Founded in 2016, the company is developing a floating platform designed to generate electricity continuously from ocean waves while handling AI computing, data processing and server cooling on the same offshore unit without a separate power plant or fuel supply. Earlier details tied to the investment said Naver made the investment through U.S. venture capital firm 8090 Industries without disclosing the amount, and described an architecture intended to transmit computing results to shore through low Earth orbit satellite networks such as Starlink. Those earlier materials also said the startup had demonstrated Ocean-1 and Ocean-2 at sea, planned an Ocean-3 demonstration within this year and was targeting commercialization by 2027. Chief Executive Officer Choi Soo-yeon said Naver is expanding into AI data centers and will make early investments in next-generation technologies to strengthen its competitiveness in the global AI infrastructure market.
