Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Samsung Life Insurance each posted their highest first-half net profits since adopting IFRS 17, underscoring broad earnings strength across South Korea's insurance industry. Samsung Fire reported consolidated net profit of 1.374 trillion won, up 10.1% from a year earlier, as insurance income rose 10.9% to 1.1145 trillion won and investment income increased 22.0% to 788 billion won. The non-life insurer said long-term insurance profitability improved, large general-insurance claims declined and auto insurance returned to a second-quarter profit of 29.6 billion won. Samsung Life reported consolidated net profit of 1.9677 trillion won, up 33.8%, as investment income surged to 1.858 trillion won on higher dividend income and improved earnings at subsidiaries and consolidated units, offsetting a 35.9% drop in insurance income to 533.1 billion won caused by one-off costs. Samsung Life's new-contract contractual service margin rose 20.4% to 1.7175 trillion won and its total retained CSM reached 13.7 trillion won, while its K-ICS ratio stood at 208% at the end of June. Samsung Fire's total CSM rose to 14.5947 trillion won. The results add to a strong first half for the sector, with Hanwha Life Insurance and DB Insurance also reporting higher earnings.
