Wallet of Satoshi is retiring its legacy custodial Bitcoin Lightning Network wallet in favor of a self-custody version that lets users control their own BTC and private keys. The new wallet will support both Lightning Network and Bitcoin on-chain transactions. Lightning invoice issuance on the old wallet has already stopped in the U.S., the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, with remaining regions due to follow by the end of September. Existing Lightning addresses will still be able to send and receive funds, and users have until June 30, 2027 to move balances into the new wallet. The move follows the company’s May shift of its in-store POS service to a self-custody model and reflects a broader industry push toward users holding their own keys after the risks of centralized custody came under sharper focus.
