A USENIX Security 2026 study identified 65,000 high-risk crypto addresses across Ethereum and BNB Chain and linked them to about $580 million in losses, including 126,982.94 ETH and 17,726.7 BNB. The presentation said the direct loss pathways largely fell into two categories: misuse involving contract accounts and deterministic contract addresses, and attacks using EIP-7702 to redirect compromised accounts to malicious code that can transfer funds. The findings update an earlier version of the figures that put the tally at 65,340 addresses and roughly $574.8 million. The research adds to growing scrutiny of address misuse and compromised-key risks on major smart-contract networks, where funds can be lost through user error, exposed private keys, or malicious code deployed to capture mistaken transfers.
