India’s Securities and Exchange Board of India has proposed allowing eligible foreign individual investors to complete regulatory onboarding digitally to help boost participation in the country’s securities markets. The proposal would relax the current requirement that overseas investors be physically located in India while undergoing digital know your customer, or KYC, verification. Individuals investing from well regulated and compliant jurisdictions would be able to finish onboarding through video-based verification and digital submission of documents, including KYC forms and electronic signatures. Intermediaries would also be allowed to rely on records available through a central KYC registry or maintained by entities regulated by other financial sector regulators, reducing duplicate checks and paperwork.
