Doosan Enerbility has secured a supply contract to manufacture core components for TerraPower’s sodium-cooled reactor, marking its first supply of key equipment for the Bill Gates-founded company’s small modular reactor program and extending years of technical cooperation into fabrication work. The company will build the reactor protection vessel, reactor support structures and reactor internal structures for TerraPower’s first 345-megawatt plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming, one of the first U.S. advanced reactor projects to enter commercial-scale construction. TerraPower’s reactor is a fourth-generation sodium-cooled fast reactor, or SFR, that uses liquid sodium as coolant and can be paired with molten salt energy storage to raise output to 500 megawatts. The agreement comes as Gates visits South Korea and as HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun is scheduled to meet him in Seoul, highlighting broader South Korean participation in TerraPower’s supply chain. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering invested $30 million in TerraPower in 2022, HD Hyundai won reactor vessel manufacturing work in December 2024 and is now producing it, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a basic agreement in May on sodium reactor supply and was selected as preferred bidder for key primary equipment.
