Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.59% to 68,713.80 on Friday, capping a 4.7% weekly gain, while the broader TOPIX added 0.51% to 4,197.20 for a record closing high. The Nikkei had earlier climbed as much as 1,299.65 yen to 69,608.24 and TOPIX briefly topped 4,200 again after flat U.S. July producer prices reinforced expectations the Federal Reserve will leave rates unchanged next month, lifting the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to record closes and supporting risk appetite in Tokyo. Lower crude oil prices, strong earnings and buying that had broadened beyond semiconductor names also helped, although profit-taking, weekend caution and short-term overheating concerns trimmed the early surge. Nomura Securities strategist Wataru Akiyama said gains in U.S. equities were feeding through to Japan, while softer inflation and falling oil had reduced expectations of an early U.S. rate hike; among Nikkei components, Nexon jumped 19.85%, followed by Shift, up 7.57%, and Nintendo, up 6.91%.
