Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said President Donald Trump's tariffs on automobiles are helping pull manufacturing back to the United States, arguing they are driving investment, jobs and training opportunities in domestic factories. In a Fox Business interview on Thursday, he said the Section 232 auto tariffs were "winning the day" at Monterey Car Week in Monterey, California, and pointed to Ford Motor Co.'s plan to move Lincoln vehicle production to the U.S. in 2030 and Toyota Motor Corp.'s existing U.S. truck manufacturing footprint as evidence. Lutnick said the push could bring "Thousands and Thousands of jobs" back to the country and create high-tech factory roles for younger workers, including positions companies are filling straight out of high school at wages starting from "23 bucks an hour." Ford CEO Jim Farley also backed the company’s domestic production shift, reportedly saying tariffs were a major factor because the Lincoln Nautilus imported from China faces a 52.5% tariff. Ford separately said it would name its sub-$30,000 EV pickup the Fathom, positioning it against Tesla Inc.'s Cybertruck.
