Jared Kushner, President Trump’s senior aide and son-in-law, is expected to travel to Israel early next week for talks on Gaza after the Israeli government rejected a U.S.-brokered deal with Hamas. Four people familiar with the plans said Kushner is expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu days after Israel rejected an agreement reached late last month between Trump’s Board of Peace and Hamas that called for the disarmament of Palestinian factions in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces there. The Board of Peace is a new international organization chaired by Trump that has focused on plans for governing and rebuilding Gaza. Kushner is a senior member of its executive board and has been involved in cease-fire negotiations between Hamas and Israel. Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel rejected the deal, a move seen as an appeal to his right-wing voting base ahead of national elections in October. At the same time, Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to pause strikes in Gaza in an apparent effort to appease the Trump administration. Israeli forces carried out no airstrikes for several days after the announcement before launching a fresh attack on Wednesday, saying it targeted Hamas militants, followed by further attacks on Thursday. The trip underscores continuing U.S. efforts to salvage elements of the Gaza plan even as disagreements remain over disarmament and Israeli withdrawal.
