Tesla's nearly three-year labor conflict in Sweden will end on Aug. 19 after IF Metall said the company offered severance packages on Aug. 13 to roughly 80 remaining union members, prompting the union to suspend industrial action without securing a collective bargaining agreement. The walkout began on Oct. 27, 2023, when service technicians demanded a labor contract that is standard in Sweden, where about 90% of workers are covered by collective agreements. Sympathy strikes by dockworkers, postal workers and electricians, along with support from unions in neighboring Nordic countries, turned the dispute into a broader test of Tesla's resistance to organized labor in Europe. Tesla has argued that its pay and benefits meet or exceed Swedish standards and that it is legally entitled to remain outside such agreements. Tesla shares rose about 4% on the resolution, while the sales impact remains contested: registrations reached a record 21,894 in 2024 before falling to 7,252 in 2025, a drop of roughly 67%, and the dispute was closely watched in Germany, where Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin has faced tensions with IG Metall. The new account said signs of recovery emerged in 2026 after the strike was resolved.
