Samsung Electronics spent more than ₩55 trillion in research and development and capital expenditures in the first half, the largest half-year total in its history, as it expanded advanced semiconductor processes and other future technologies. Its semi-annual report filed on August 14 showed R&D spending rose 51.5% year on year to ₩27.36 trillion, while capital expenditures increased to ₩28 trillion, with investment focused on the Device Solutions semiconductor division and Samsung Display. In memory, Samsung said it continued spending to strengthen next-generation products and prepare for mid- to long-term demand, while its system semiconductor business worked to secure leading-edge production capacity, or CAPA, for global customers. At the same time, the smartphone business faced heavier cost pressure as mobile memory prices rose about 211% from last year's annual average, while mobile application processor solution prices increased about 6% and camera module prices about 5%. Even with that squeeze, market share trends were broadly positive: DRAM share rose to 39.4% from 34.0% as AI server memory demand stayed strong and selling prices increased; smartphone share climbed to 22.0%; and TV share rose to 30.6% as premium products sold better. The filing also showed first-half raw material purchases rose to ₩55.83 trillion from ₩50.93 trillion a year earlier. Among executives, President Roh Tae-moon received ₩7.45 billion in first-half pay and CEO Jun Young-hyun received ₩2.39 billion, while average compensation for Samsung's four registered directors was ₩3.14 billion per person.
