MSCI dropped a proposal that would have excluded Strategy and other digital asset treasury companies from its Global Investable Market Indexes if more than 50% of their assets were in digital assets as of September 30, 2025. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy and holding about 840,447 BTC, argued it operates as a productive business using Bitcoin as operating capital rather than serving as a passive investment vehicle. MSCI said on January 6, 2026 that companies on its preliminary DATCO list would keep their existing index treatment, though it indicated it would continue reviewing non-operating companies. The decision removed a potential source of forced selling by index funds tracking MSCI benchmarks, and Strategy shares rose as much as 7%. The outcome matters beyond one company because roughly 39 firms could have been affected, highlighting how corporate Bitcoin treasury strategies have become embedded in mainstream market structure.
