Ireland has published its first National Anti-Money Laundering, Countering Financing of Terrorism and Countering Proliferation Financing Strategy, setting out tighter crypto-related controls including enhanced checks on transfers involving private or self-hosted wallets and stricter due diligence when dealing with overseas crypto firms. The government said the final elements introduce new anti-money laundering obligations for crypto-asset service providers, while legislation to implement AML/CFT rules under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework is already well advanced. The strategy also addresses industry standards for accepting crypto-related activity as a source of funds for gambling. The move follows Ireland's first national crypto risk assessment in seven years, released in June, which said the country planned to implement industry standards by the second half of 2027 as officials stepped up efforts to address the use of digital assets in money laundering and terrorist financing.
