Netflix's eight-episode FTX-inspired drama The Altruists will premiere on Nov. 19, revisiting the rise and collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto empire through figures including former CEO of Alameda Research Caroline Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang. The series has released first-look images, stars Anthony Boyle as Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner as Ellison, and is described by Netflix as the story of two young idealists who try to remake the global financial system before being accused of stealing $8 billion. Inspired by New York magazine reporting and created by Graham Moore, the show arrives after FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, Bankman-Fried was convicted in November 2023 on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy and later sentenced to 25 years in prison, and broader scrutiny fell on the effective altruism creed he once promoted.
