Stellantis is considering closing and selling its Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant, Unifor said, adding pressure ahead of contract talks over a labor agreement that covers three Canadian facilities and expires on Sept. 20. Lana Payne, president of Unifor, said the automaker informed the union this week of the possible move at the Toronto-area factory, which was closed for retooling in 2024 and had been due to reopen in 2025 to build the Jeep Compass before that work was paused and production shifted to Illinois after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and pressed carmakers to move operations to the U.S. The union has also flagged earlier reported talks between Stellantis and Chinese partner Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology about making electric vehicles at the idled site.
