Cristian Romero has completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid, signing a contract through June 30, 2031 in a deal reportedly worth €40 million ($46.2 million) that also gives Spurs a 15% sell-on clause. The 28-year-old centre-back becomes Atletico’s fourth signing of the summer as Diego Simeone strengthens his squad for the 2026-27 La Liga season. Romero leaves north London after five seasons, during which he made 156 appearances, scored 13 goals and provided seven assists. He was a central figure in Tottenham’s 2024-25 UEFA Europa League triumph, winning the tournament’s Player of the Season award and the man-of-the-match prize in the final as Spurs claimed their first European trophy in 31 years. Atletico said Romero had completed his medical in Madrid before signing at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, describing him as an experienced, physical and authoritative defender with strong leadership qualities. Romero previously played for Belgrano, Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta, where he was named Serie A Best Defender for 2020-21, before joining Tottenham on loan in 2021 and then permanently. A 58-cap Argentina international, he has won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles and the Finalissima, and was also part of the side that finished runner-up at the 2026 World Cup. In a farewell message on X, Romero thanked Tottenham supporters, teammates and staff, saying he had always given everything and would always carry part of the club with him.
