Jane Street took a $15 billion hit in July from its exposure to AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness and other technology stocks caught in the market selloff, according to two people familiar with the matter and an internal note. The firm nevertheless generated more than $40 billion in trading revenue year to date, one source said. Situational, run by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, sold most of its stock portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel in July after the AI downturn triggered margin calls. Jane Street told employees that the fund's drawdown left its stake roughly flat for the year, while long positions in non-AI Asian stocks also hurt performance after earlier gains. The firm said it had closed a significant portion of the risk in the areas that lost money in July and had reduced risk taking elsewhere.
