Yongsan District and the Seoul Metropolitan Government have opposed a government proposal to review Yongsan Park as a housing supply site after Land Minister Kim Yoon-duk said the government was considering the entire park, not only Yongsan Children's Garden. The dispute is due to be discussed when Kim and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon meet on Sept. 20 over follow-up measures to the government's Aug. 13 fast-track plan, which includes more than 73,000 additional housing plots to be announced by year-end. Other points of tension include possible greenbelt release and housing density at the Yongsan International Business District. Observers say using Yongsan Park for housing would also face legal and practical hurdles, including the park's status under the special act on the creation of Yongsan Park, the return of the U.S. military base, soil decontamination and consultations with Seoul and Yongsan authorities.
