Coinbase said on Aug. 15 that it is expanding its AI-agent financial infrastructure beyond trading and investment guidance into merchant payments and developer tooling under what it calls "AiFi." The company said autonomous software will be able to research, plan, make decisions and trade assets including cryptocurrencies, stocks and derivatives through its "Everything Exchange," while Coinbase Advisor inside the Coinbase app will provide investment assistance. Coinbase also said businesses can accept payments from AI agents in USDC through Coinbase Business with native x402 integration, avoid card-style chargeback risk, earn 3.35% rewards on idle USDC and manage funds, reconciliation and withdrawals in the same account. Separately, CEO Brian Armstrong said agents can now access credit lines and use the x402 protocol to complete work on behalf of users, and argued that cryptocurrency is the best fit for AI-agent finance because it is programmable, global, supports instant low-fee transactions and meets the operational needs of autonomous software.
