Changpeng Zhao said millionaires may soon struggle to buy a full Bitcoin, underscoring how the asset’s fixed supply could tighten ownership as issuance nears its 21 million cap. He was responding to analyst Quinten Francois, who said the United States has about 23.6 million millionaires, more than the number of whole Bitcoins available even before accounting for coins that may be lost or inaccessible. As of August 2026, Bitcoin’s circulating supply stood at about 20.071 million BTC, leaving roughly 929,000 BTC, or around 4.4% of the total supply, still to be mined, CoinGecko data showed on August 15 at 2:00 pm UTC. Bitcoin traded at about $62,985 to $62,987 at that time, up 0.7% over 24 hours but down 3.1% over seven days. Zhao has previously said 10% to 20% of existing Bitcoins could be lost, stuck, or unrecoverable, and he recently weighed in on custody (holding crypto directly or through a platform) by saying exchange storage was statistically safer than self-custody (holding your own private keys), while noting both approaches carry different risks. Separately, Binance said it would halt transactions involving 16 crypto platforms tied to the European Union’s 21st package of Russia-related sanctions and two entities designated by the U.S. Treasury.
