David Tait, CEO of the World Gold Council and Chair of the FMSB Precious Metals Working Group, said in an August 5, 2026 interview that Bitcoin could eventually "go to zero," arguing that it remains highly correlated with high-risk assets and questioning its long-term sustainability. At the same time, he said portfolio diversification still matters, adding that investors with gold should also hold Bitcoin and that Bitcoin holders should also own gold because the two assets can balance each other during periods of market stress. Tait also said gold's rise reflects massive public debt rather than temporary drivers such as wars, interest rates or tariffs, pointing specifically to the U.S. debt burden of $39 trillion. Binance co-founder CZ responded that many past judgments about crypto have been wrong, said understanding the sector takes time, and added that he cannot be 100% sure he is right because "we are all human."
