LG opens second Brazil appliance plant to target Latin America growth

LG Electronics has opened its second home appliance production base in Brazil, adding a new factory in Paraná as it expands manufacturing in Latin America and seeks to improve local supply resilience. The site, built with an investment of about $310 million, or BRL 1.5 billion, has annual capacity of about 600,000 refrigerators, equivalent to one unit every 14 seconds, and joins LG's Manaus plant in Amazonas, which began operations nearly three decades ago. The Paraná facility spans roughly 770,000 square meters and uses smart factory systems including Vision AI-based inspection and industrial robots to improve productivity, product consistency and workplace safety. LG said articulated robots are used for more physically demanding processes such as moving refrigerator doors. Production is designed around Brazilian market requirements. Refrigerators developed for the plant were based on research by LG's Brazil R&D team of about 40 professionals and include bi-voltage compatibility for the country's 127V and 220V power systems. The models are also engineered for Brazil's hot and humid climate and home-entertaining culture, with LED-based internal sanitization features intended to help prevent bacterial growth. LG said the factory will initially serve Brazil's domestic market while improving logistics efficiency, reducing dependence on imports and cutting delivery times by as much as 80%. Over the medium to long term, the company expects the plant to develop into a strategic production and export hub for Latin America, giving it greater flexibility as global supply chains shift. Baek Seung-tae, president of the LG Home Appliance Solution Company, said the investment would support stable supply and more tailored products for consumers in Brazil and across the region.
