Stripe is in advanced, exclusive negotiations to acquire OpenRouter for approximately $10 billion, Bloomberg reported, in a deal that would rank among the largest in AI infrastructure. No agreement has been finalized. OpenRouter, founded in New York in 2023, gives developers a single API (software connection interface) to access more than 500 large language models from over 60 providers, letting them route traffic through one endpoint instead of building separate integrations. The platform processes trillions of tokens monthly and serves millions of developers. The price under discussion marks a sharp increase from the company’s May 2026 funding round, which valued it at $1.3 billion. The talks also carry strategic weight for Stripe, which already handles OpenRouter’s payments and has expanded into usage-based billing (charging by consumption) through its Metronome acquisition. That combination could give Stripe a stronger position in model routing, billing and the rising flow of AI agent-driven API calls. The negotiations remain fluid, with the possibility of rival bids or no deal, while developers may focus on whether OpenRouter can keep the marketplace breadth and neutrality that helped drive its adoption.
