Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and envoy, held rare talks with Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt and is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as mediators try to revive the US-backed Gaza peace plan that Israel rejected earlier this month. The discussions in El Alamein also included Board of Peace director Nickolay Mladenov and were aimed at turning the ceasefire proposal into concrete, verifiable steps including Hamas disarmament, Israeli troop withdrawal and the start of reconstruction. Hamas said it would only proceed if Israel halted strikes and pulled forces back to the "yellow line" under the earlier ceasefire framework, while Netanyahu has insisted Hamas must be fully disarmed before any Israeli withdrawal. Trump’s 15-point plan, unveiled in late July, forms part of a broader Board of Peace structure that was backed by the UN Security Council in November to oversee Gaza’s demilitarization and rebuilding. A group of Arab and Muslim countries including Egypt and Qatar said Israel now bears responsibility for obstructing peace efforts after rejecting the proposal.
