Animated film 'Niulai' turned into an unlikely crypto talking point after a same-named meme coin on BSC (BNB Smart Chain, a blockchain network) grew into a $43.10 million token even as the movie struggled at the box office. The film opened on Aug. 5 with first-day ticket sales of 3,420 yuan, and by Aug. 14 its cumulative box office had only just topped 7,000 yuan with attendance of a little more than 200 people. That same day, the meme coin appeared with an initial market capitalization of about $10,000, underscoring how speculative trading in meme coins can quickly detach from the commercial performance of the cultural property that inspired them.
