Indonesian markets traded mixed on Wednesday ahead of Bank Indonesia's policy decision, with the rupiah strengthening to below IDR 17,850 per U.S. dollar after briefly touching 17,950 in the prior session, while the Jakarta stock market fell 39 points, or 0.6%, to 6,410 in early trade. Investors widely expected the central bank to leave rates unchanged at its first meeting under Acting Governor Destry Damayanti, after a cumulative 100 basis-point increase since May, while watching how she balances currency stability with President Prabowo Subianto's growth agenda. Equity sentiment was pressured by Wall Street's semiconductor selloff, elevated bond yields and firmer oil prices, as well as domestic concerns including recent natural disasters, doubts over 2027 budget assumptions and delays to electric motorcycle incentives. At the same time, Damayanti's nomination after serving as senior deputy to Perry Warjiyo, together with a conservative 2027 budget proposal, had helped ease some policy uncertainty and support Indonesian assets. Traders were also cautious before Indonesia's Q2 current account data, after the Q1 deficit widened to its largest level since 2019 on weaker trade, and before the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting.
