China's central bank has added eight more banks to the list of institutions authorized to operate the digital yuan, bringing the total number of e-CNY operators to 30. The People's Bank of China announced on Aug. 17 that Ping An Bank, Hengfeng Bank, Bohai Bank, Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Hangzhou, Huishang Bank, Bank of Changsha and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Bank were newly included and will connect to the central bank's digital yuan system. The expansion further broadens the distribution network for the e-CNY, China's central bank digital currency, as authorities continue to widen access through commercial banking channels. The digital yuan has evolved beyond a limited pilot into a broader form of digital money infrastructure, with banks acting as the service layer linking users to the central bank's system.
