Shinsegae's Gangnam store is widely expected to become South Korea's first single department store to post 4 trillion won ($2.9 billion) in annual sales this year after first-half sales rose more than 20% from a year earlier. The store generated about 3.67 trillion won last year, meaning even roughly 10% growth in 2025 would be enough to clear the threshold, and industry officials now see that outcome as highly likely. Lotte's Jamsil store is moving in the same direction, with first-half sales also reported up more than 20% after about 3.3 trillion won in sales last year, putting it on track to approach 4 trillion won if consumer conditions and the business environment remain stable in the second half. Both stores have been expanding much faster than the broader department store sector, helped by dense luxury brand lineups, big renovation projects and stronger demand from foreign tourists as spending broadens beyond Myeong-dong to Gangnam-area destinations. Their momentum also reflects resilient demand from high-income local shoppers in Gangnam and Jamsil. The pattern is spreading across the market, with Shinsegae's main store and Lotte's Incheon store also posting sharp gains, suggesting 2025 could mark a step change for major South Korean department stores.
